President Biden's abortion rally disrupted by repeated protests over Gaza

President Joe Biden speaks during an event on the campus of George Mason University in Manassas, Va., Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024, to campaign for abortion rights, a top issue for Democrats in the upcoming presidential election.

WASHINGTON ― President Joe Biden pushed through repeated heckling Tuesday from pro-Palestinian protesters in his first major campaign rally of 2024, providing a stark reminder of friction on the left that could threaten his reelection bid.

Biden, appearing with Vice President Kamala Harris and their spouses at a joint campaign rally in Manassas, Va., called on Democrats to help him restore abortion rights "with your voice, with your power, with your vote," as he blamed former President Donald Trump for dismantling the protections previously guaranteed by Roe v. Wade.

But his message was cut off by about a dozen interruptions from protesters in the crowd who voiced their opposition to Biden's backing of Israel in its war in Gaza. One person chanted, "Genocide Joe!" A woman shouted, "Ceasefire now!" Another yelled, "Israel kills two mothers every hour!" Several demonstrators were escorted out by security.

"This is going to go on for a while," Biden told the crowd at one point. "They've got this planned."

While Biden sought to energize Democrats on abortion rights, the scene at the Hylton Performing Arts Center laid bare the discontent of many young progressives over a different issue: the war in the Middle East.

Although sporadic protests over the war in Gaza are not unusual at Biden events, the scene Tuesday was at another level. Biden was interrupted from his opening remarks – and then every couple of minutes until he finished.

Their outcries prompted Biden supporters standing behind the president to drown them out by chanting, "Four more years!" and "Let's go Joe!"

Biden, speaking under a large sign that read "Restore Roe," tried to look ahead to the general election in a likely rematch against Trump while he ignored the New Hampshire Democratic primary held the same day. Biden skipped the historic first-in-the-nation primary amid the state's dispute with the Democratic National Committee over the primary calendar.

"Let's remember, it was Donald Trump and his Supreme Court that ripped away the rights and freedoms of women in America," Biden said. "It'll be Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and all of you who are going to restore those rights to the women of America."

During the first joint rally held by the President and Vice President, Biden and Kamala Harris spoke on what they perceive as a threat to reproductive rights.

Trump's three Supreme Court appointments tilted the court to a conservative majority, leading to the overturning of the landmark of the Roe v. Wade decision in 2022, which provided a constitutional right to an abortion. Since Roe's collapse, a wave of abortion bans have passed in Republican-controlled states across the country.

Biden told his supporters, "Donald Trump is betting we won't vote on this issue" and "betting that we won't hold him responsible, either."

Amanda Zurawski, a mother from Texas, introduced Biden and talked about her personal encounter with the state's abortion restrictions when she needed the treatment after she learned her baby girl wouldn't survive the pregnancy. She said she was only allowed to get an abortion when her life was at risk. She said she nearly died.

"It was in that dark and lonely hospital room where I realized that I was actually lucky. Others wouldn't be so lucky," Zurawski said. "What I went through was nothing short of barbaric. And it didn't need to happen, but it did because of Donald Trump."

The court's overturning of Roe is widely credited with energizing Democrats in the 2022 midterms and helping them exceed expectations. The abortion issue has also been a winner for Democrats in several state referendum elections since the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision.

"Let us be very clear about who is responsible," Harris said. "Former President Trump handpicked three Supreme Court justices because he intended for them to overturn Roe. He intended for them to take your freedoms. He is the architect of this healthcare crisis. And he is not done. And the extremists are not done.

"But what they need to know is that we will not allow it," Harris added. "The American people will not allow it.

Hamas missile command, control system fully operational

Hamas missile command, control system fully operational

TEHRAN, Jan. 01 (MNA) – The Palestinian Hamas Resistance movement command and control system is still up and running despite nearly three months of bombardment and ground invasion against the besieged Gaza Strip.

“The Resistance has not lost its command and control system,” a senior Zionist military analyst at the Walla news website said on Monday after Hamas fired a barrage of rockets at the occupied territories just at the start of the New Year.

“The missile salvos from Gaza prove that Hamas still has a functioning command and control system and that it has capabilities to launch long-range rockets,” Amir Bohbot added.

The analyst noted that it is very difficult to define the areas “cleared” of Hamas fighters because of the large number of underground sites belonging to the Resistance group.

He further said that Israel’s challenges in Gaza have remained the same since the beginning of the war, including the issue of captives, as well as Hamas officials, and its infrastructure.

On Sunday, the Zionist military claimed that rocket launches by Hamas had dropped from an average of 75 per day in late November to only 14.

Boaz Golan, founder of Zionist news site 0404, doubted the claim, saying, “Now, Hamas is firing dozens of missiles... It’s time to stop insulting ourselves!”

In a video published on social media, the al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, said it had fired M90 rockets towards Tel Aviv and southern areas in the occupied territories in “response to the massacres of civilians” carried out by Israeli regime.

Israel waged the genocidal war on Gaza on October 7 after Hamas carried out the cross-border Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

However, 87 days into the invasion, the Tel Aviv regime has failed to achieve its objectives of “destroying Hamas” and finding Zionist captives despite killing 21,822 Palestinians, mostly children and women.

Institute for the Study of War, a US think tank estimates that out of 26 to 30 battalions of Qassam Brigades fighters, which were believed to exist on October 7 – each having 400 to 1,000 men, only three have been rendered inoperable – or, in civilian parlance, destroyed.

“Hamas remains resilient and able to reconstitute its military capabilities, despite its military losses in the war thus far,” the American think tank said.

Gaza death toll rises to 21,978

The spokesman for the Ministry of Health in Gaza, Ashraf Al-Qudra, stated Monday the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) committed 13 massacres, resulting in 156 martyrs and 246 injuries during the past 24 hours, which raised the total death toll of the aggression against Gaza to 21,978 martyrs and 57,697 injured.

326 healthcare workers have been martyred, and 104 ambulances were destroyed and taken out of service, in addition to the IOF deliberately targeting 150 health facilities, rendering 30 hospitals out of service. 99 healthcare workers are currently arrested and subjected to inhumane conditions, Al-Qudra added.

He warned that 1.9 million displaced Palestinians are exposed to famine and epidemics, and urgently requested sending medical teams and field hospitals to meet the overwhelming need of the medical sector in the Strip.

Al-Qudra called on international institutions to exert efforts to protect the health system and its staff
